FACELIFT SURGERY

Over time, gravity and environmental exposure take a toll on the face and neck leading to facial skin laxity, lack of jawline definition, and jowls. As we age our ability to generate collagen decreases. This combination of increased laxity and loss of volume lead to deep creases, loose folds and a tired look. Facelift surgery corrects these common signs of aging by tightening facial tissues, redistributing volume, and removing excess skin. Every patient is different; therefore, each requires a customized facelift to address his or her concerns and restore a natural and youthful appearance. During your personal and comprehensive consultation with Dr. Sung, you will receive a facial rejuvenation plan tailored to your individual needs and desires. Our goal is not to create a “new face” for you, but rather to restore your youthful face.

AM I A CANDIDATE FOR A FACELIFT?

A facelift improves cosmetic imperfections in the lower and middle areas of the face and neck. The ideal candidates for facelift surgery have realistic expectations of the procedure and are in generally good health. Both men and women may consider facelift surgery if they can relate to any of the following cosmetic concerns:

  • Mid-face sagging
  • Deep creases under the eyes
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Jowls
  • Loose skin under the chin
  • Excess fat under the chin

Although a facelift removes or reduces signs of aging, over time, they will gradually reappear. A facelift does not improve the look of the brow, eyelids and nose.

A patient who wants to improve those areas might combine their facelift with one or more of the following procedures:

  • Brow lift
  • Eyelid surgery
  • Nano fat treatments
  • Fat grafting
  • Laser skin resurfacing

HOW IS A FACELIFT PERFORMED?

A facelift is an outpatient procedure that is typically performed in an office-based facility, surgical center, or hospital.  The surgery takes about two hours and can be done using either IV sedation or general anesthesia. Both methods involve repositioning facial tissue, SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) mobilization, trimming away excess skin, and tightening the remaining tissue and musculature. Fat grafting may also be used to restore youthful facial volume if necessary. The facelift technique depends on the patient’s facial structure and the extent of correction needed. Dr. Sung offers two facelift surgery techniques.

FACELIFT TECHNIQUES

TRADITIONAL TECHNIQUE

A traditional facelift requires incisions that begin within the temple at the hairline and follow down and around the ears. The resulting scars are hidden within the hairline and natural contours of the ear. The effects of a traditional facelift tend to last longer than those of a limited-incision facelift.

LIMITED-INCISION TECHNIQUE

The limited-incision facelift technique requires shorter incisions than the traditional facelift. These incisions begin at the temple and follow the hairline to the front of the ears. Like the traditional facelift, the resulting scars are hidden within the hairline and natural contours of the ear. This approach is most appropriate for patients who do not have neck skin laxity.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING MY FACELIFT RECOVERY?

Drains are removed the day after surgery, and any surgical clips and stitches are removed after one week of recovery. Patients can expect some swelling, numbness, bruising, and tension of the surgical site after facelift surgery. Most of these side effects resolve within three to six weeks, and changes in sensation typically normalize within a few months. Patients should avoid strenuous activity, direct sun exposure, bending, and lifting for up to six weeks.

WHAT RESULTS CAN I EXPECT AFTER MY FACELIFT?

It can take up to six months to completely heal from facelift surgery, at which point most, if not all, swelling and tingling should be resolved. Any scars that result from the procedure are hidden in inconspicuous locations, and they tend to fade over time. Because a facelift will not stop the natural aging process, the face will continue to age after surgery. However, patients who undergo facelift surgery will look noticeably younger and refreshed for many years. A facelift does not improve the appearance of the brow area, eyelids, and some parts of the mid-face. A patient who wants to improve those areas might combine their facelift with brow lift surgery, eyelid surgery, injectable fillers, fat grafting, or laser treatment.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF A FACELIFT?

Complications associated with facelift surgery are uncommon, especially when performed by an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon. However, some of the risks of the procedure can include the following:

  • Changes in sensation
  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Scarring
  • Injury to nerves at or near the surgical site
  • Hematoma and/or seroma
